This paper reports on an investigation into stitching techniques used to secure woven tapestry artefacts fabric supports. A research project digital image correlation (DIC) as a method of evaluating commonly support techniques, with tests carried out wool rep and historic fragment. Though it was necessary first establish parameters for use, DIC proved very helpful the effects these treatments. It demonstrated that damage leads high levels deformation strain, extension creep are mitigated by stitched support. shown patch gives good results if is damaged in discrete area, while full provides better overall weak areas, even they not themselves fabric. In general, clear closer stitching, lower strain. However, comparing global local strain showed closely spaced constrained area more than sample overall. suggests carry intensive provide could allow us optimise amount successful treatment tapestry, though further may be visual compensation loss. concluded both partial combination fabric-covered vertical mount effective reinforcement.
